If you want to take payments online, you need to know how to add a payment gateway to your website — the piece that securely takes a customer’s card, UPI, or wallet payment and moves the money to your account. The good news for Indian businesses is that this is far simpler than it used to be. Here is what you need and how it works.
What a Payment Gateway Actually Does
A payment gateway is the secure bridge between your website, the customer’s bank, and yours. When a shopper pays, the gateway encrypts their details, checks the payment is valid, and settles the money into your account a couple of days later. You do not handle raw card data yourself — the gateway does, which is exactly why you use one rather than trying to build payments from scratch.
Do You Even Need a Full Gateway?
Worth asking first. If you run a store with many products and a proper cart, yes — you need a gateway integrated into checkout. But if you are a service business that just needs to collect the occasional payment (a deposit, an invoice), you may not need full checkout integration at all: most gateways offer payment links and simple “pay now” buttons you can share over WhatsApp or email, with no complex setup. Match the solution to what you actually sell — do not build a full ecommerce checkout when a payment link would do.
What You Need Before You Start
- A registered business (or at least a current account and PAN — requirements vary by gateway).
- A gateway account — Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree, and CCAvenue are the common Indian choices.
- A website that supports payments — a WooCommerce or Shopify store, or any site where you want a “pay now” button.
Adding It on WooCommerce
On WooCommerce the process is plugin-based: install your chosen gateway’s official plugin (Razorpay, PayU, and others all publish one), enter the API keys from your gateway dashboard, enable the payment methods you want (cards, UPI, wallets, net banking), and run a test transaction. Because WooCommerce is on your own site, you keep full control of the checkout experience.
Adding It on Shopify
On Shopify you connect the gateway from Settings → Payments. Shopify supports Razorpay and others for India; you authorise the account and it is live. Note Shopify also has its own transaction fees on top of the gateway’s unless you use certain integrated options — worth checking so the cut per sale does not surprise you.
Which Gateway Should a Small Business Pick?
For most small Indian businesses the practical differences are small — Razorpay, PayU, and Cashfree all support cards, UPI, wallets, and net banking with similar per-transaction fees (typically around 2%). Choose on onboarding speed, settlement time, and support quality rather than tiny fee differences. Whatever you pick, do not forget Cash on Delivery: a large share of Indian online orders are still COD, so enabling it (a built-in option, not a gateway feature) matters as much as the gateway itself.
How Long It Takes and What It Costs
Getting a gateway live is usually a matter of days, not weeks — most of the wait is the gateway verifying your business documents, not the technical setup, which is an afternoon’s work. There is normally no upfront fee to add a gateway; you pay per transaction instead. Budget around 2% of each sale as the gateway’s cut (rates vary slightly by method — UPI is often cheaper than credit cards). There may also be settlement timing to plan around: the money typically reaches your bank a day or two after the sale, not instantly. None of this is a reason to delay — it is simply the cost of accepting money online, and it is far cheaper than losing every customer who will not pay by bank transfer.
Always Run a Real Test
Before you go live, make one real payment yourself and confirm the money lands and the order is recorded correctly. A checkout that silently fails costs you sales you will never even know about — the same reason we stress testing on contact forms.
